Fundraising sponsored cycle 31st July 2021 – Leeds

July 31st was our 2nd Sponsored Cycle event.

Mark the chef manager had once more chosen the route, and this time although shorter the route’s halfway mark was the accent of the 5 locks at Bingley

Wearing our hi vis vests with the LSP logo, and with Mary and Grace taking collecting boxes on their handle bars, we started our sponsored cycle at Roberts Park – Saltaire.

Although Friday had been a day of very heavy rain, God allowed Saturday to stay dry and fine.

Various cyclists took the lead, and Mark and Eamon ensuring all were safe. Despite Sandra’s chain coming off her brand new bike, all completed the ascent at Bigley of the 5 locks rise, however only Mark managed it on his saddle the rest had to resort to pushing their bikes up as The five-rise is the steepest flight of locks in the UK, with a gradient of about 1:5 (a rise of 59 ft 2 in (18.03 m) over a distance of 320 ft (98 m)). The intermediate and bottom gates are the tallest in the country.

The descent back down was somewhat more enjoyable and the speed gained was fabulous! The views along the canal were lovely.

People chatted with us as we passed by, asking why we were fund-raising.

Back at Roberts Park the entrepid cyclists enjoyed a lovely packed lunch sitting on the grass and joined by some other family members, including Sandra’s dad Ken, who is a resident in the independent Living.

Overall this fun – fundraiser – raised over £2000 towards the Fire Enforcement Works.

The pandemic has forced us to do more outdoor fundraising, so roll on the next event!

Just a very quickly jotted few thoughts about our recent sponsored cycle!
