The Sound of an Orchestra

On Monday July 21st 2025 we hosted a wonderful event @ St Joseph’s Nursing Home Ferrybank Waterford.

We welcomed the smiling faces of a very young group of students from the YING WA Primary school in Shamshuipo HONG KONG between the ages of 9-12years old.  (60 musicians)

Their School Principal Dr Chan (May-Kuen Sylvia MH) along with other teachers, parents and the orchestra’s conductors & team all set up the wonderful instruments that would be played for us during their performance.  There was a culmination of all orchestral instruments from bowed, stringed, wind, percussion, & string section all laid out before us. The Orchestra is called YING WA Orchestra and at Ying Wa Primary School they believe that every child is talented in their own way and as educators their aim is to nurture these gifts by providing diverse platforms for them to express themselves and to shine.  I can tell you that is exactly what happened today, to say that they delivered an impressive performance would not be enough. Their attention to detail was outstanding and each member extremely talented ,had their own unique skill for such a young student.

The performance was held in our magnificent concert hall and it provided the perfect intimate setting for the young students because the audience and the orchestra were close and it was, in a way, more personal.  It’s amazing how music can have a direct impact on one’s emotions & feelings throughout a performance and this was very evident throughout the audience which was a mix of residents, family members, friends, staff & the sisters of our home.

We also celebrated Grandparent’s Day and both activities complemented each other and it was the young talent that echoed around the home, that made it all the more special.

The performance was melodious, outstanding, phenomenal, very impressive and finally, it has certainly left a lasting impression on all of the audience

.

Refreshments, were served both in the Concert Hall and the Abbey Tea Room with many delightful treats for all the young members of the orchestra & the grandchildren, and great grandchildren that attended this special day

.

We finished with a very warm THANK YOU from the Principal of the school in Hong Kong and from myself & the Sisters of the Home to a rapturous applause from all present along with a spontaneous display of Irish step dancing with some of the visitors. This was a great treat & the cameras did not stop rolling I can tell you!!!

God wants us to bring great joy to the hearts of the elderly, and that was certainly in abundance today, as we celebrated this joyful day.

“Doh Jeh “Cantonese Thank You
